CAMRA Petition calls on Greene King to keep Ridleys Brewery Open
2nd September 2005
CAMRA has sent a petition with 4,800 names to Greene King calling on the Suffolk brewer to reconsider its decision to close Ridleys Brewery in Essex following its acquisition in July. Greene King has announced plans to close the 163 year old brewery in the autumn. At its AGM today Greene King has announced an increase in beer volumes of 6% in the last 12 months.rnrnMike Benner Chief Executive of CAMRA said:rnrn“The real ale market is currently going from strength to strength because consumers’ increasingly value distinctive locally produced beers and the huge variety of real ales to choose from. Greene King’s decision to close Ridley’s Brewery; buy Belhaven Brewery and axe popular beer brands threatens to undermine the very choice and diversity that is the key to the success of real ale and the success of Greene King.”
